Party at Grandma and Papa's

We celebrated Sadie's birthday in Cedar Falls with my family, Joe's family, and my best friend from elementary school - lots of fun for everyone!

Modeling her new cowgirl outfit and pink boots

Painting nails with Lala....

...and Carl!

What a great uncle!

Hello Kitty!

The coveted crown

Sadie's preschool teacher makes a birthday crown on the day each child celebrates his or her birthday at school.

Ever since the first classmate of hers had a birthday, she has been desperate for a crown of her own. If it is someone else's birthday, she usually gets into the van after school holding back tears because she wants to know "My turn for a crown?"

So, Friday was finally her day....and she was all smiles as she got in the van with her crown on her head.

And she has continued to wear it much of the weekend.

Cute Cake Clothes

Over a year ago - or maybe even two - I got these cute cake clothes and was looking forward to the birthday when Sadie would finally fit into them.

I should have saved my money, given her obsession with wearing Sam's old clothes.

She is usually quite adverse to wearing anything that she has not seen on Sam before. Sometimes I can talk her into it, but more often than not I just decide it's not a battle worth fighting.

Today, however, I was up for the fight. Nothing says "Game on, little girl" like Gymboree clothes scored on sale.

And I was feeling like she could just give in this day, since she had worm Sam's old baggy sweatpants and t-shirts to school all week long.

I presented them in such an enthusiastic manner, I thought I just might win her over. "Look at your new clothes! For your birthday! See the cake! See the cupcake! Miss Geri will think they are so cute! And I even have a cupcake hairbow for you! Look, Sadie - CUTE!"

She met my enthusiasm with an equally determined "NO!" and arms crossed in defiance.

I won't describe the details of the maneuvers I had to entail to get the clothes on her body, but we had quite the wrestling match complete with a headlock to put the bow in her hair.

She was none too happy about me wanting to take a picture to document the end result, either.

Eventually I got some smiles....

I sent her off to school for the afternoon, praying she wouldn't start taking the clothes off the moment she was out of my sight.

Chopsticks

The biggest hit of the last few days at our house has been the new chopsticks we got in the mail from Aunt Elisa and Uncle Matt.

Again....not the most exciting video in the world....just wanted Matt and Elisa to see the gifts in action.

This is the best one of them right after we opened them, testing out their skills on some fruit loops.
(They both seem to be a bit on the loopy side, too...)

This is Sadie with her chopsticks later in the day. The best part is the "yeah!" which is an impression of her cousin Ben from a recent video of him eating.

Another one of Sam - I am quite impressed with his ability to eat rice with chopsticks.

Hula time!

Not really that these videos are that exciting, but they make me smile...a little Wii Fit hula hooping action.

The things they notice...

Sam's comment tonight at supper:

When I'm a daddy, I'm going to eat a lot of corn. 'Cause that's what daddies do.

My response:

Or maybe you'll be one of those daddies that eats lots of different vegetables.

(Not that I'm unhappy with the daddy at our house. He is, however, the kind of daddy that my son was speaking of.)

Flashback to October 2010: Bye-bye bedrails!

This was a momentous occasion that I wasn't sure would ever happen.

(At least until he went to college when it would be a bit embarrassing to show up at his freshman dorm with bedrails in tow.)

Sam - my crazy spin-circles-all-night-long sleeper - asked to have his bedrails taken off.

And since his younger sister has been sleeping without them for almost a year, I didn't really feel like I could say no.

I did, however, remind him quite a few times about his sleeping habits.

He would not be discouraged.

Here he is - bedrail free!

He's only fallen out a couple of times (at least that I know of).

I did find him one night sitting by his bed, asleep, but by the time I went to get the camera to take a picture of it he had crawled back up onto the mattress(because that's what good mothers do - take pictures instead of helping their children back in bed). So - who knows how many times he has done that!

Flashback to October 2010: Angry Birds and Funny Faces

Oh.....there are so many pictures on my camera I meant to blog about months ago.

So - you will randomly be subjected to flashbacks you may or may not find interesting, but that I want to make sure I get on here, even if it is a bit out of season.

Back in October we were all (my brothers and I and our families) home for a retirement party for my dad.

This is what the scene was on the couch literally minutes after walking through the door.

That would be 3 iphones and 1 ipad, all playing Angry Birds.

Lala and I felt a little left out, so we made funny faces to amuse ourselves.

Sadie joined in, too.

3 - 2 - 1 - Blast Off!

My little astronauts (thanks to Joe's parents for the authentic spacesuits!)

Sadie decided she better sleep in hers, just in case she was needed in space in the middle of the night.

These boots were made for walking

I got some new boots today.

Seems like Sadie is laying claim to everyone's new clothing items lately....

Fine Dining

Pearls are a must for dinner at our house.

Especially when it's as gourmet as spaghettios.

(That's her father's fault.)

And she ended up with 2 bowls because Sam took one bite and said something along the lines of "Ewww...."

Way to go, Sam!

(He and I carried on with a more civilized dinner while Sadie and Joe lapped up the toddler-fare.)

Flying pizzas!

Birthday Fun

Opening presents

A remote control car, which Sadie seems to be trying to claim for her own.

Sadie also tried to lay claim to Sam's new pajamas - by putting them on over her clothes as soon as he unwrapped them.

Cool - another plane!

Decorating our own license plates (to go with the race car theme)

Sam's masterpiece

Sadie and Papa hard at work.

Blowing out the candles

I did it! All the candles are out!

Sam (with a little help from his friend) put this one together all by himself!

The kids and Grandma with the completed space puzzle.

The cake

Sam requested a race car cake again this year. (Which we did last year.)

One Google search later and a picture of a race track cake instead, I had him convinced to go this (easier - and in my opinion, cuter) route.

A big thank you to Grandma for making it a reality!

T-shirt Tradition, 2011

I can't believe I just typed 2011.

That means Sam is 5.

FIVE!

How did that happen?

Here he is in the annual photo in one of Joe's t-shirts. Last year I about had to wrestle the shirt on him and beg to get a decent shot. This year he was all for it (probably helps I remembered as we were laying in bed and it meant he got to get up). He even did a series of poses for me and then requested that I put them all up on the blog.

And here are years past for comparison.
