Not a fan

Last Sunday I was attempting to put a white polo shirt with a few stripes on it on Sam. He is not fond of wearing any shirt with a collar, but I insist for church.

He looked at me not so happily.

"I'm not wearing that shirt."

"Sam, it's fine. You have to wear a shirt like this to church."

"Not this one. My orange one, please."

"Why? What is wrong with this one?"

"I'm not a fan of white shirts."

Stuck in the middle

This afternoon Sam, Sadie, and Anna were standing in a line to take turns going to the bathroom.

Sam looked at me and said, "Mom. God said the last is first and the first is last, right?"

"Yep."

"Did he say anything about the middle?"

I'll give you one guess what his position was in the line.

Upgrade

We went to the doctor yesterday to check in on Sam's arm. We thought he was getting the permanent cast last week, but the doctor wanted to leave it in the splint for a week to make sure everything stayed in place alright without surgery.

Everything looked good, so Sam got to pick out his color and I asked for waterproof lining so we don't have to worry about it getting wet. The doctor informed me it would cost more, and most likely be out of pocket for us since insurance usually doesn't pay for it. I asked how much, and he apologetically said "Oh, usually $75 or $80." Ummm....that's all? I would happily pay a couple times that much to be able to go to the pool and have Sam in the tub without a plastic bag wrapped around his arm.

Here's Sam, showing off his upgrade - a big step up from the splint and ace bandage wrap. It's already decorated with some buttons to help in his superhero adventures.

Here he is reenacting the smile on his face when he heard he would be able to go swimming.

Grandmommie's Birthday Weekend

So - other than the trip the ER on Sunday night - we had a great 4th of July weekend with (most of) Joe's family celebrating his mom's birthday. We missed Amanda and Hillary (in Hawaii and Spain, so I guess we will excuse their absence... :) but were excited to have Joe's parents, his brothers and aunt in Chicago for the weekend.

We - don't ask me how - managed to get a picture of all 4 cousins smiling and looking at the camera!

Lily got eat her first ice cream cone.

The kids had lots of fun on the swingset.

We went to the zoo.

We took a group snowcone break (or two), as we happened to choose a really, really, really hot day to wander around outside looking at animals.

The dads were in charge of the girls while out to supper Saturday night, which explains the placement of the stickers used to entertain them while waiting for the food.

The kids had to fight it out with Uncle Johnny and Amy for the candy from the pinata.

Since Sam missed cake the night before, Grandmommie was kind enough to don the birthday crown and light the candles for breakfast the next morning.

The (in)famous pinata

This is it.

We were celebrating Joe's mom's birthday. Sam planned the party, from "Minute to Win It" games to the candles for the cake to the pinata full of candy.

This is the before picture.

The games had been played, the pinata had been emptied (or so we thought), and we were about to have cake.

I was inside putting dishes in the dishwasher when I heard screaming.

Loud screaming.

I looked out the window, gathered that Sam had fallen while playing, saw Joe was out there to attend to the situation, and went back to the dishes.

And being the ever sympathetic mother that I am my first thought was "Wow - Sam is really, really tired to be screaming that loud about a little fall."

But then he kept screaming.

And I heard Joe say some words not usually heard around our house, particularly with children present.

And I looked out at his arm and saw it was bent in a not-so-natural position.

So off we went to the ER - both of us convinced that he had broken both bones in the lower part of his arm due to the extreme angle of it.

Thankfully, it was not as bad as we thought.

Sam was so brave and so polite and such a good patient - we could not be more proud of him.

And since I have been predicting multiple ER trips for this boy ever since he starting jumping and doing tricks off everything in sight at age 1, I guess I should be thankful it took us until age 5 for the first bone to break.

The official story from Sam: "I thought I heard a few pieces of candy still in the pinata, so I stood on the swing to try to bang them out. And then I fell. I guess I won't do that next time."

Happy Adoption Day, Sam!

Sam's adoption was final 5 years ago today!

The annual picture (with what appears to becoming the annual shirt...see last year's post)

We started the day with a trip to the orthopedic dr. to check out Sam's arm (which he broke Sunday night...more on that in another post). On the way home we stopped for doughnuts and celebrated with the neighbors for breakfast. Then after lunch we had our special Adoption Day popsicles Sam picked out at the grocery store this morning.

And here is Sam posing with one of his presents - the long-coveted Lego Ninjago game.
