Sam and I seem to have a lot of random conversations about death.
I never really know where they come from.
Today, while driving home from preschool...
"Mom, how do you die?"
"Huh?"
"How do you die?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like - HOW do you die?"
"Well...you stop breathing and your heart stops beating and your body doesn't move anymore."
"Oh. That's how?"
"Yeah - it's when your body doesn't work anymore, usually because you get really old, or get really sick, or get hurt really badly."
"Like when your older than a grandma or a papa....like 100...or 99?"
"Usually. Hopefully."
"So, it's like being in an invisible ice cube?"
"I guess you could say that."

Not your usual snack request
I try to be healthy around here.
Most of the time.
As long as I don't want a bowl-of-ice-cream/chips and dip/nachos/insert your favorite unhealthy snack myself.
I even managed to turn down the request for popsicles this morning at breakfast.
(Though I did serve Sadie her favorite Easy Mac....and yesterday Sam had garlic bread for breakfast...)
Afternoon snack requests usually involve some sort of frozen item full or sugar.
But this is the conversation I just had with Sam.
"Mom, can we have a snack?"
"You just finished popsicles!" (Literally, 5 minutes ago.)
"No, Mom. Something HEALTHY. Like FRUIT."
Every once in a while I get a glimpse that maybe I am a better mom than I think I am....
Or maybe he learned that at preschool.

Two astronauts and a princess
Sadie had a princess birthday party to go to this afternoon, where they got their hair done and had all sorts of princess fun.
I couldn't quite believe it was my daughter when I picked her up!

And while she was partying, Sam and our friend Zara stayed home and were astronauts discovering new planets.

10 p.m.
And he was supposed to be sleeping...
Until now, I could count on 1 hand - no, actually 0 hands - the number of times this boy has voluntarily chosen to color.

Happy Mother's Day
We had a great Mother's Day, despite the fact that when I informedd Sam that Dad and kids do dishes on Mother's Day, he responded with, "Are you sure?" followed by "Did you look it up?" and then "Are you kidding me?"
The kids each made presents at preschool and brought them home with great fanfare that they had "surprises" in their backpack and there should be "NO PEEKING!"
Sadie went as far to hide her present.....in the corner of my bedroom.
(Sam tried his hardest to get her to choose a better location and was quite frustrated that she would not listen to him).
We had strawberry pie for breakfast and my favorite chicken salad for lunch. (Well, I did, at least...)
Joe and the kids picked out flowers for the front and got them planted for me.
Now I just have to remember to water them enough to keep them alive.

I GO FISHING POLE
Last weekend Sam and I were gone to an adoption workshop (for kids 5 and up, so Sadie couldn't go yet...)
I started prepping her a couple weeks beforehand, since we would be gone overnight, and she is not too fond of me leaving the house even for an evening (unless she gets to come too).
So, I was pleasantly surprised when I had the initial conversation with her.
"Sadie, Sam and Mommy are going to go to a meeting in a couple weeks. And you and Daddy get to stay home and do some fun things." (I made no mention of what those special things might be...)
"OK, Mama. You and Sam go meeting. Daddy and Sadie GO FISHING POLE!"
Apparently she had decided they would be going fishing.
And for the weeks leading up to it, she told anybody she could that "Sam and Mommy go meeting. Me and Daddy go FISHING POLE!"
And go fishing they did.

Too bad they didn't catch any fish!

Happy Children's Day!
May 5 is Children's Day in Korea and we celebrated by putting the kids in charge of (most) choices for the day.
We started out with donuts.

Got some new toys at Target.

(I may have hinted strongly that Hungry Hungry Hippos would be a good choice. I remember playing this as a child at other people's houses and always wanting it.I should have just gone and bought it for myself years ago....then my children could actually pick their own toys!)
Lunch at McDs, the park with friends after school, sticky rice for supper (along with a few other things), and push-ups for dessert.
Doesn't get any better than that.
At least when you are 5 or under.
